Syrah No~9: Composed of 45% Syrah, 22% Grenache, 16.8% Mourvèdre, 5% Touriga Nacional and 1.2% Viognier, the Next of Kin 2015 Cumulus Vineyard #9 was fermented using 42% whole clusters and the rest was destemmed. It was matured for 34 months in oak, 40% of which was new. Deep garnet-purple, the nose unabashedly struts its stuff, giving up flamboyant plum preserves, blackberry compote, Black Forest cake and star anise notes with hints of Sichuan pepper, forest floor, lavender, lilacs, Ceylon tea and smoked meats. Big, concentrated and full-bodied, this rockstar is a powerhouse of energy, supported by a rock solid, firm and super plush tannins and finely knit freshness, finishing very long. Tantalizingly delicious now, patience will be rewarded here. Given this wine’s structure and intensity, it should easily cellar for 30-40 years. 370 cases were made.

Touriga Nacional Número Um: The 2015 Touriga Nacional Cumulus Vineyard Número Um is Manfred Krankl's inaugural Touriga Nacional from his Cumulus Vineyard in Oak View. Unfurling in the glass with notes of clove, dark cherry, cherry pit, sweet spices and blackberries, it's a full-bodied, layered wine with a velvety attack, considerable concentration and a deep, even massive mid-palate, concluding with a youthfully chewy finish. This wine will be released in Spring 2019 as part of the Next of Kyn offering, in a box that includes one bottle of this Touriga Nacional as well as two bottles and one magnum of Next of Kyn #9: 1,194 such boxes were produced.

Syrah No~9: The 2015 No. 9 Cumulus Vineyard is off the charts gorgeous, just as it was from barrel last year. Tasted from bottle, the 2009 is a bit closed, but all the aromatic depth, soaring intensity and energy that it showed from barrel is there. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s sensational pedigree. Dark cherry jam, mocha, grilled herbs and leather are some of the many notes that develop with time, but it is the wine’s overall structure that truly elevates into the realm of the divine.

Touriga Nacional Número Um: The 2015 Número Um, which is now part of the Next of Kyn range, is a captivating, voluptuous beauty. Floral overtones add lift and brightness to a wine that speaks with energy, power and intensity in every dimension. Tasted after all the Sine Qua Non wines, the Número Um more than holds its own. It is yet another dramatic, large-scaled wine from Elaine and Manfred Krankl. The 2017 will spend about 34 months total in French oak, about 62% new. Dollops of Mourvedre, Syrah and Viognier round out the blend.

Syrah No~9: A wine that’s going to flirt with perfection in another handful of years, the 2015 No 9 Cumulus Vineyard checks in as a complex blend of 45% Syrah, 22% Grenache, 16.8% Mourvèdre, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Touriga Nacional, and the rest Viognier that saw 42% stems and 34 months in 40% new French oak. Sensationally perfumed, with powerful notes of blackberries, graphite, crushed rocks, black pepper, and dark chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, and incredible purity of fruit. This beauty has everything – richness, acidity, density, tannins, and length. Give it a handful of years and it will keep for 10-15 years.

Touriga Nacional Número Um: The first Touriga Nacional from California I’ve ever tasted, the 2015 Touriga Nacional comes all from the Cumulus vineyard in Oak View and is 80% Touriga Nacional, 8% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah, and the rest Viognier that was mostly destemmed, and spent 34 months in 62% new French oak. This beauty gives up a voluptuous, sexy yet also incredibly elegant profile to go with notes of blueberries, violets, white chocolate, and cherry pie. Full-bodied, deep, and layered, it has fine tannins as well as remarkable purity and freshness. In short, it’s an incredible expression of the variety that I suspect will keep for 10-15 years.
